Benefits of Window Film

Window film has many varying benefits from appearance to functionality. As a window tinter the first thing I always look at when I see any piece of glass is whether it is tinted or not. Have you noticed every vehicle in commercials you see is tinted? That’s to make the car more attractive to the purchaser. The benefits don’t stop at appearance. Ever sat in a vehicle with leather or vinyl seats? Well if the windows weren’t tinted the first few minutes were probably uncomfortable. Tinting windows helps ladies with shorts or skirts to not burn the back of their legs.

Window films vary from 5% to 90% VLT or visible light transmission. This is the percent of light that penetrates the film. Most feel this is the most important value when choosing a film for your home, business or vehicle. The “total solar energy rejected” is what I feel the most important. This is just as it sounds, the amount of solar energy NOT able to penetrate the film. This number will increase with the darker the film and is very comparable from one automotive film to another with percentages up to 50%. When choosing a film for your home or office the solar energy rejected can vary with type of film chosen. You may choose a 15% VLT film and have ranges of 50% to 80% solar energy rejected. So make sure you ask not only for the VLT but the total solar energy rejected as well.

A lot of people don’t understand why their dashboard in their car or their nice rug in their house fades. It is not just the sun, it is the ultra-violet rays. Window films, even clear films offer up to 99% UV protection. You’ve worked hard and spent that hard earned money on a nice vehicle and furniture why let the sun and UV rays ruin them?

Another thing people worry about is their electronic devices in their vehicles losing signals due to film. That was an issue years ago with the mostly metal based films. Now film companies are very proactive in not only keeping the temperatures in your vehicle low but your devices working as designed as well.

Have you ever sat on your couch on Sunday afternoon to watch the game and get upset by that bright square on your expensive HD television? Well film helps to not only reduce that glare but as mentioned earlier can save the sun and UV rays from damaging your investment as well.

When film is applied you have less wear and tear on your HVAC systems in your home/office and your vehicle. This can lengthen the life of a very costly unit to replace whether it’s in your home or vehicle.

Another thing to consider before choosing a film for your home is your home owners association bi-laws. Make sure whatever film you apply will not violate those rules. Have your requirements ready and available at the time of your estimate so you choose not only the best film but one that will not cause problems between you and your neighbors.

Last but not least, installing window film in your residence may also make you eligible for an energy tax credit!
