How to Remove window Film Without Damaging Defrosters

Window tint removal doesn't take any special skills, but it can be a pain in the neck.  With the proper tools, a little effort and patience it is definitely something you can do yourself and save some money.

Supplies needed:
1 inch razor blades
Any device that creates steam (I use a wallpaper remover)
Mr. Clean magic eraser (make sure its “Mr. Clean”)
Squeegee
Spray bottle filled with water and a few drops of dish soap

It will take some time for the steam device to heat up so plug that in first. Wash the outside of the window so you are not trying to clean spots on the inside that are actually on the outside. Once you have steam take a razor blade and in a section without defrosters, at the edge of the window scrape a piece of film about an inch. This is where you will start the removal.  Aim the steam between the film and the glass. Keep it there a few moments then try and peel back the film. If it doesn't work right away be patient and let the steam work. Keep tension on the film as you steam pulling away from the glass. (If you start on the right of the window and are going left pull the film to the right and down). It may take some time but it will remove the film without damaging the defrosters.

Once all the film is removed wet the window and the magic eraser with the soap and water solution. There may be some glue left over and this is the best method I have found to remove it. The magic eraser will remove the glue but you may need to put some “elbow grease” into it. Periodically wet and squeegee the window to check for glue.

If you are removing film from a window without defrosters (or if you don't care if the defrosters become damaged) Simply use a razor blade to scrape away the film.  As long as you are using a sharp blade it will not scratch the glass.  You will need several blades because removals cause them to dull quickly.  Once all of the film is off you can use a new blade to scrape away any leftover glue.  Follow that up with the soapy water and a squeegee or paper towels and you are done!
